Shaxi Ancient Town<\/strong> is a hidden gem located in Jianchuan County, Dali Prefecture, roughly halfway between Dali and Lijiang. Unlike the bustling old towns of Dali and Lijiang, Shaxi is remarkably well-preserved and refreshingly quiet \u2014 the only surviving ancient market town on the historic Tea Horse Road.<\/div>\n

Shaxi’s history dates back to the Spring and Autumn period, but it flourished during the Tang and Song dynasties as a vital caravan stop on the Tea Horse Road. In 2001, its central Sideng Street<\/strong> was listed by the World Monuments Fund as one of the world’s 100 most endangered sites. A Swiss-led restoration project preserved its authentic character, making it one of the best-protected ancient towns in China.<\/div>\n

Local Bai, Yi, and Hui villagers gather to trade honey, goat cheese, wild mushrooms, medicinal herbs, and handwoven textiles. It’s an unmissable experience for photography and cultural immersion. Arrive before 11 AM for the liveliest atmosphere.<\/div>\n
