The two smaller pagodas reflect Song Dynasty elegance with their octagonal design.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pua-ref-renderer pua-ref-renderer--cite\" data-v-d2fbbf55=\"\" data-v-d664c8c3=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-eusoft-scrollable-element=\"1\">History<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-eusoft-scrollable-element=\"1\">Origins (9th Century)<\/h3>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Built during the reign of <strong>Nanzhao King Quan Fengyou<\/strong> (\u529d\u4e30\u7950, 824\u2013859 AD), the pagodas were originally part of the grand <strong>Chongsheng Temple<\/strong> \u2014 the royal monastery of the Nanzhao and later Dali Kingdoms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pua-ref-renderer pua-ref-renderer--cite\" data-v-d2fbbf55=\"\" data-v-d664c8c3=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-eusoft-scrollable-element=\"1\">The &#8220;Buddhist Capital&#8221;<\/h3>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">At its peak, Chongsheng Temple was one of the largest Buddhist complexes in Southeast Asia:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\"><strong>890 rooms<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\"><strong class=\"\">11,400 Buddha statues<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\"><strong>Used 40,590 jin of copper<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p><strong class=\"\">9 of the 22 kings of the Dali Kingdom became monks here<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"pua-ref-renderer pua-ref-renderer--cite\" data-v-d2fbbf55=\"\" data-v-d664c8c3=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p>This is why Dali was known as the <strong class=\"\">&#8220;Land of Fragrant Buddhas&#8221; (\u5999\u9999\u4f5b\u56fd)<\/strong>. The temple also inspired the <strong>Tianlong Temple<\/strong> in Jin Yong&#8217;s famous wuxia novel <em>Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pua-ref-renderer pua-ref-renderer--cite\" data-v-d2fbbf55=\"\" data-v-d664c8c3=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-eusoft-scrollable-element=\"1\">Destruction &amp; Survival<\/h3>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The original Chongsheng Temple was <strong>destroyed by war during the Qing Dynasty<\/strong> \u2014 only the Three Pagodas survived. The current temple complex was <strong>rebuilt in 2005<\/strong> near the original site.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pua-ref-renderer pua-ref-renderer--cite\" data-v-d2fbbf55=\"\" data-v-d664c8c3=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 data-eusoft-scrollable-element=\"1\">The Earthquake Miracle<\/h2>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">The Three Pagodas have survived <strong>over 30 major earthquakes<\/strong> in 1,200+ years \u2014 a testament to extraordinary ancient engineering:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p><strong>1514 (Ming Dynasty):<\/strong> A massive earthquake caused the Qianxun Pagoda to crack &#8220;like a split bamboo&#8221; \u2014 yet it <strong>healed itself within 10 days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pua-ref-renderer pua-ref-renderer--cite\" data-v-d2fbbf55=\"\" data-v-d664c8c3=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p><strong>1925:<\/strong> Another devastating earthquake destroyed 99% of Dali&#8217;s houses. The pagodas only lost their top ornaments.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pua-ref-renderer pua-ref-renderer--cite\" data-v-d2fbbf55=\"\" data-v-d664c8c3=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The pagodas have actually been <strong>leaning for over 400 years<\/strong> but remain structurally sound \u2014 built directly on soil without stone foundations, using angled brickwork and smart engineering.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pua-ref-renderer pua-ref-renderer--cite\" data-v-d2fbbf55=\"\" data-v-d664c8c3=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-eusoft-scrollable-element=\"1\">Legend: &#8220;Subduing the Dragons&#8221;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">Ancient Dali was a marshy &#8220;land of water spirits&#8221; prone to floods. According to the <em>Jinshi Cuibian<\/em>:<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\"><em>&#8220;Dragons revere pagodas but fear the golden-winged roc bird.&#8221;<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The pagodas were built to <strong>suppress water spirits and prevent floods<\/strong>. The <strong>golden-winged roc bird (\u5927\u9e4f\u91d1\u7fc5\u9e1f)<\/strong> statue atop the main pagoda symbolizes this protective purpose. The screen wall in front bears the inscription <strong>&#8220;Eternal Guardian of Mountains and Rivers&#8221; (\u6c38\u9547\u5c71\u5ddd)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pua-ref-renderer pua-ref-renderer--cite\" data-v-d2fbbf55=\"\" data-v-d664c8c3=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-eusoft-scrollable-element=\"1\">How They Were Built<\/h2>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">Legend says the pagodas were constructed using a remarkable technique:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\"><strong>&#8220;Stack earth to build the tower, then dig away the earth to reveal it&#8221;<\/strong> \u2014 workers piled soil around the tower as they built upward, then excavated to expose the finished structure.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\"><strong>Goats carried bricks<\/strong> \u2014 the village of Yinqiao (\u94f6\u6865) was once called &#8220;Pagoda Bridge Village&#8221;
