Mu’s Mansion<\/strong> (full name: Mu Family Chieftain’s Yamen<\/em> \/ \u6728\u6c0f\u571f\u53f8\u5e9c\u8859\u7f72) is the historic residence and government office of the Naxi Mu chieftains, located in the heart of Lijiang Old Town<\/strong>, Yunnan Province. It is often called the “Forbidden City of Lijiang”<\/strong> for its grand scale and imperial-style layout.<\/p>\n

History<\/h2>\n
The mansion was founded during the Yuan Dynasty<\/strong> and reached its peak in the Ming Dynasty<\/strong> (from 1382 onward). For 470 years across 22 generations<\/strong>, the Mu clan ruled Lijiang as hereditary chieftains under the Ming and Qing empires.<\/p>\n

The original complex was so grand it was said to rival the Forbidden City itself \u2014 a risky boast in imperial China. Most of it was destroyed during Qing Dynasty warfare<\/strong> and the 1996 Lijiang earthquake<\/strong>. The current structure is a meticulous reconstruction (1998\u20131999)<\/strong> based on the original site, now also housing the Lijiang Ancient City Museum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 1997<\/strong>, the mansion \u2014 as part of Lijiang Old Town \u2014 was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Murals in the Yuyin Pavilion show the fusion of Han Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, and Taoism<\/strong>, reflecting the Naxi people’s open, inclusive worldview.<\/p>\n
