Blue Moon Valley<\/strong> (\u84dd\u6708\u8c37) is one of the most photogenic spots in all of China \u2014 a string of glacial lakes at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (\u7389\u9f99\u96ea\u5c71) in Lijiang, Yunnan. The water here is a surreal turquoise-blue, fed by snowmelt rich in minerals.<\/div>\n

What Makes It Special<\/h2>\n

The valley sits at about 2,900 meters<\/strong> (9,500 ft) and is part of the larger Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area. The lakes get their striking blue-green color from dissolved copper ions and a pH around 8.2, which scatters sunlight in a way that makes the water look like liquid turquoise.<\/p>\n
