Black Dragon Pool (黑龙潭, Heilongtan), also known as Jade Spring Park (玉泉公园), is one of Lijiang’s most iconic scenic spots. Located at the northern edge of the Old Town at the foot of Elephant Hill (Xiangshan), it is famous for the classic postcard view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflected in the clear pool waters, framed by traditional pavilions and bridges.

Highlights
Mountain reflection**: The signature view of the snow peaks mirrored in the still water, especially with the Five-Arch (Five-Hole) Bridge and Deyue Pavilion (Moon-Embracing Pavilion) in the foreground.
Historic architecture: Deyue Pavilion, Five Phoenix Pavilion (Wufenglou — an elegant multi-roofed Ming-era style building), Dragon God Temple, and other Qing-dynasty structures.
Springs, willow-lined paths, and peaceful park atmosphere.
Dongba Culture Museum / Research Institute nearby or within the broader area (good for learning about Naxi pictographic script and traditions).
Occasional cultural events or the traditional Dragon King temple fair.
The pool is also historically significant as a water source for Lijiang Old Town and a place of local worship.
Practical Visitor Information
Location**: No. 1 Minzhu Road, Gucheng District, Lijiang (short distance north of the Old Town).
Getting there**:
Easy 15–30 minute walk from the northern parts of Lijiang Old Town (follow the canals upstream).
Bus: Lines 3, 4, 13, 16, or others to Heilongtan stop.
Taxi or ride-hailing: Very quick and inexpensive from the Old Town.
Opening hours**: Typically around 07:30–21:00 (last entry ~20:30). Hours can vary slightly by season.
Tickets**: The park itself is generally free or accessible with the Lijiang Old Town maintenance fee receipt (commonly ~50 CNY, valid for several days and covering multiple Old Town-related sites). Policies can change—confirm on-site or via official channels. Certain discounts apply for children, seniors, etc.
Suggested time**: 1–3 hours (longer if combining with photography, the museum, or a short walk up Elephant Hill for wider views).
Best Time to Visit
For the classic reflection**: Clear, calm mornings (especially early) or late afternoons. Winter and clear days in autumn/spring offer the best visibility of the snow peaks. Cloudy or rainy periods (common in summer) reduce the chance of a perfect mirror view.
Early morning is ideal for softer light, fewer crowds, and the best chance of seeing “Golden Mountain” lighting on the peaks.
Tips
Bring a camera—the reflection shot is one of Lijiang’s most photographed scenes. The area around the Five-Arch Bridge and Deyue Pavilion is the prime viewpoint.
Wear layers; mornings can be cool even when days are mild. Altitude is about 2,500 m.
Combine easily with Lijiang Old Town, Mu’s Mansion, or a day trip to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
The park is relatively flat and accessible for most visitors.
Black Dragon Pool offers a peaceful contrast to the busier Old Town streets and remains one of the best places to appreciate the harmony of Naxi landscape, architecture, and the sacred Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Check current ticket and entry rules closer to your visit, as local policies occasionally update.
