The 2021 Fire & Rebirth
On February 14, 2021, a devastating fire destroyed the centuries-old village in just hours. Conservationists including Feng Jicai and Ruan Yisan called for reconstruction following the “Five Originals” principle — original materials, structure, craftsmanship, style, and environment — insisting that villagers themselves must lead the rebuild, because “what others build is a hotel, not a home”
.
Today the site is divided into two parts: the reconstructed old village (visitor area) and the new village where residents actually live. The village has risen “from the ashes” — in 2024 it welcomed 220,000 visitors, developing a “nostalgia + study-tour” model
.
