Pu-er tea

Pu-er tea (普洱茶) is one of China’s most celebrated teas, produced exclusively in Yunnan Province using large-leaf (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) sun-dried green tea as raw material

. Its name comes from the historic tea trading hub of Pu’er City, though the tea is grown across southern Yunnan — primarily in Xishuangbanna, Pu’er City, and Lincang

.

🍃 Two Main Types: Sheng vs. Shou

Sheng (Raw) Pu-er Shou (Ripe) Pu-er
Process Sun-dried, then steamed and pressed; no artificial fermentation Sun-dried, then artificially fermented via “wo dui” (wet piling)
Appearance Dark green to brownish-green leaves Dark reddish-brown leaves
Liquor Golden, bright, and clear Deep red, thick, and opaque
Taste Fresh, fragrant, slightly astringent with strong returning sweetness (huigan) Mellow, smooth, sweet, with aged/earth/cedar notes
Nature Cooling; more stimulating to stomach Warming; gentle on digestion
Best for Those with strong digestion, lovers of complex evolving flavors Beginners, daily drinkers, those with sensitive stomachs
Aging Improves dramatically over decades Drinkable immediately; mellows further with age
Beginner tip: Start with ripe tea (Shou) — it’s approachable and forgiving. For Sheng, try teas aged 3+ years to reduce harshness

⛰️ Famous Yunnan Tea Mountains

Pu-er is all about “one mountain, one flavor” (一山一味). The terroir creates distinct profiles:
Mountain/Village Region Flavor Character Price Tier
Lao Banzhang Xishuangbanna · Menghai · Bulang Mountain Powerful, aggressive, intense “qi” (tea energy), long-lasting aftertaste Ultra-premium (8,000+ RMB/500g)
Bingdao Lincang · Mengku Elegant, crystalline sweetness, floral, silky texture Ultra-premium
Yiwu Xishuangbanna · Mengla Soft, honeyed, balanced, highly approachable Mid-range; excellent for beginners
Jingmai Pu’er City · Lancang Distinct orchid aroma, sweet, quick astringency-to-sweetness conversion Mid-range
Xigui Lincang · Bangdong High fragrance, concentrated, fast huigan Mid-to-high
Bulang Mountain Xishuangbanna · Menghai Strong, full-bodied, slightly less aggressive than Lao Banzhang Mid-range
Nannuo Mountain Xishuangbanna · Menghai Mellow, persistent aroma, very drinkable Mid-range
Advice for newcomers: Don’t chase famous names immediately. Yiwu, Bulang, and Jingmai offer outstanding quality-to-price ratios and are more forgiving to new palates

🏭 Trusted Brands & Benchmark Teas

For stable quality and transparent pricing, start with these factory benchmarks:
  • Dayi (大益):
    • 7542 — the industry benchmark for Sheng Pu-er
    • 7572 — the industry benchmark for Shou Pu-er
These have been produced consistently for decades and are ideal reference points

      .

  • Xiaguan (下关): Famous for tuo cha (bowl-shaped tea); classic, affordable daily drinkers.
  • Lancang Ancient Tea (澜沧古茶): 0085 is a benchmark ripe tea using Jingmai ancient tree material.
  • Chensheng Hao (陈升号): Specializes in single-origin teas from famous villages like Lao Banzhang.
Avoiding fakes

:

  • Never buy “no-brand, no-origin, no-certification” tea.
  • Be skeptical of “thousand-year ancient tree” marketing — true gushu (ancient tree) production is tiny.
  • If a “Lao Banzhang” costs less than ~8,000 RMB/500g, it’s almost certainly fake

    .

  • Buy from reputable dealers or flagship stores.

📦 Forms & Storage

Form Characteristics Best For
Bing ( Cake ) — 357g standard Best for aging; stable transformation; traditional gift format Long-term storage, collecting
San ( Loose ) Easy to measure; ready to drink Daily drinking
Tuo / Zhuan ( Bowl / Brick ) Dense, durable, travel-friendly Long-term aging, transport
Longzhu / Mini Tuos One serving per piece; highly portable Office, travel, beginners
Storage essentials

:

  • Keep in a clean, dark, dry, ventilated, odor-free environment.
  • Separate Sheng and Shou — never store them together or flavors will cross-contaminate.
  • Ideal humidity: 60–70%; temperature: 20–30°C.
  • Never refrigerate. Southern Yunnan climates speed up aging; drier northern climates preserve aroma purity.

💡 Quick Takeaway
